Press Release
The annual Verbier Art Summit connects thought leaders to key figures in the art world. Each winter, the Summit creates a platform for discourse, innovation and change in inspiring Verbier.
Artists such as Douglas Coup-land, Rem Koolhaas, Pamela Rosenkranz, Tino Sehgal and Anicka Yi meet and exchange with innovative thinkers like Professor Benjamin Bratton, philosopher Cissie Fu and VR specialist Dado Valentic.
The Summit is an independent initiative organised by a non-profit association in partnership with a yearly rotating international museum director, such as Beatrix Ruf of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 2017 and Daniel Birnbaum of the Moderna Museet Stockholm in 2018. The Verbier Art Summit educates and inspires, welcoming anyone with a love for art and innovation to the free two-day art talks in Verbier, or online via live broadcasts. The Summit’s multidisciplinary speakers provide inspiration on a different theme each year.
The Verbier Art Summit is proud to announce its 2019 theme and partnership with acclaimed museum director Jochen Volz of Pinacoteca de S‹o Paulo, Brazil. The next Summit will take place on 1–2 February 2019 in Verbier, Switzerland, and will be curated by Jochen Volz around the theme:
WE ARE MANY ART, THE POLITICAL AND MULTIPLE TRUTHS
The 2019 Summit will welcome speakers from diverse backgrounds to contribute to its programme. Each speaker demonstrates leadership and innovation at the intersection of society, politics, and art. They will come together in Verbier, Switzerland, for a weekend of dialogue to ask how we might shape and define a progressive role for art in our uncertain times.
Museum director Jochen Volz writes on his choice for the theme in the latest Summit publication:
“For the 2019 Verbier Art Summit, I propose to explore themes that have been present in artistic and institutional practices for decades, but that have gained additional urgency in recent years: concepts of many histories, of plural forms of knowledge, and of contradicting narratives and multiple truths.
We are many and we can shape and direct the things that are happening. Art can and should be a means by which to challenge prevailing thinking and spur individual and collective action.”
Verbier, at an altitude of 1500m and with its stunning views across the Swiss Alps, is a unique venue for an Art Summit.
Isolated from the distractions of urban life and inspired by the abundant natural beauty, people can share ideas, socialise and network whilst enjoying the sun and snow in the largest ski area of Switzerland.
To generate new initiatives and visions, the Summit offers memberships to a select group of international art world stakeholders, including collectors, museum directors, artists, curators, art historians, art critics, gallerists and art consultants. The members are encouraged to actively exchange perspectives in an extended debating programme.
